In his article, Jonathan Tobin, an editor-in-chief at Commentary, claims that it is obvious that the humanity is clearly reluctant to value the lives of its fellow human beings. He states that, in the article “Animal life in not more valuable than the human life”, “protecting the life of a child is a supreme value that transcends even our sympathy for beautiful or rare animal. By this he means that we have to put the human life in the first priority when it comes to chose between human or non-human.
According to the unfortunate incident that happened in the zoo in 2016, both mother of the 3-year-old child and the security system should not be accused of the death of the gorilla. Since any child can be a playful and parents may not control their actions in every situation. And as for the zoo, this was the first time this type of incident had ever happened.
As for the 2nd question, in the Peter Singer’s ideas about the animal liberation and speciesism, the human life is more valuable than the nonhumans. We can not put the animal interests in the same consideration with the human interests. In certain situations, like in the zoo, we have to choose humans over animals which have not the equal conscious with humans. As for the author, the human life is unique value which should be considered as superior.
To conclude, I want to admit that I strongly agree with the idea of the writer that the lives of humans should be the first priority. I would choose human life over animals even they are endangered species, if I were the security personnel of the zoo.
