The construction of the airport was started by the British company Costain Group in 1959 on the orders of the ruler of Dubai Sheikh Rashid ibn Saeed al-Maktoum (Arabic راشد بن سعيد آل مكتوم). Officially, the airport opened in 1960 and had a small passenger terminal, three aircraft landing sites and a runway of 1800 meters long on compacted sand, capable of accepting aircraft in sizes with Douglas DC-3.
