9.  Sentence Analysis 

Sentence analysis is to analyse group together units within the sentence.  

 

For instance: ‘Hilary couldn’t open the window’ 

 

Hilary couldn’t open = verb phrase, the window = noun phrase 

sentences 

are analysed into 

clauses 

are analysed into 

phrases 

are analysed into 

words 

are analysed into 

morphemes 

 

10.  Constituent Analysis  

An analysis of syntactic units in a phrase structure tree. 

See example below: 

 

The boy loves the girl.  

(the girl is a noun phrase constituent) 

 

11.  Immediate Constituent Analysis 

An  analysis  of  a  sentence  based  on  the  functions  of  the  component  to 

identify  the  major  components  and  the  immediate  relationship  of  each 

component.

Subject (S)  

Verb (V)  

Object (DO)  

Adverb (Adv)
