strategic silence media n. calculated and tactical uncommunicativeness. Silence can be used to place emphasis on what has already been stated or to increase the strength of a position in an argument. Silence may also be used to open up reflective space for the reception of ideas and arguments. SJ

striptitle an alternative, explanatory, or subordinate title in a book or film, also referred to as subtitles. Striptitles may be used to provide a sense of the theme of a work or to denote installments in a series of works. Striptitles also refer to the captions displayed on a film or television screen that translate or transcribe dialogue. SJ => subtitle.

sub-culture media n. an oppositional or marginal social group defined by distinctive frameworks of belief, musical preferences, expressive styles, leisure pursuits and values that set them apart from mainstream society. mmo

subliminal media adj. stimuli and messages that are subconscious, unconscious, or hidden. While they may not be strong enough to produce conscious response, subliminal stimuli can influence mental processes and behaviour. SJ

suture2 media v. the process whereby the cinema audience is ‘stitched into’ the experience of watching and making sense of a film by techniques of continuity editing. mmo
