Theme: Advertising
The words “marketing” and “advertising” are often used to describe the same thing, but there are several key differences. The American Marketing Association makes the main distinction: Marketing entails the methods used to identify customer needs and establish the best ways to meet them. Advertising is an essential component of marketing that uses paid channels to promote products and services. When companies advertise goods and services, they pay to place their branding and/or messaging in different locations. Ads are placed on social media, television, billboards, and banners attached to planes flying through the sky. Companies have control over where they place their ads, and it is essential to do so properly and strategically for the best results. Professionals classify advertisements in various ways. For example, Dynamic Marketing separates ads according to the desired end result. Introductory ads focus on creating awareness of a message and work for new product releases. These kinds of advertisements are designed to stir up curiosity, entertain and/or educate. A differentiating ad creates familiarity and shows what makes a product stand out from the competition.
Shared value ads are meant to create good feelings – warm and fuzzy, in fact – by relating to consumer humanity. These can be heartbreaking, hilarious, lighthearted or made to appeal to other emotions. Trial ads come with a feeling of urgency, with time limits that should make audiences feel that they need to act right away. Examples include limited-time discounts and free gifts with purchases.
