Smart Irrigation Systems are implemented in fields in order to simplify
the monitoring of moisture and temperature and to maintain a proper
irrigation. These systems utilize the concept of IOT and image processing.
Smart Irrigation Systems comprise two solar panels, charge controller,
battery, Arduino, Ethernet shield, relay, soil moisture and humidity sensor
alongside with a DC pump. The solar panel plays the role of power source
and generates the electricity. These electrical charges are stored in the
battery with the help of the charge controller. The Arduino, soil moisture
sensor, humidity sensor, DC pump needs supply from the battery via charge
controller. Depending upon the output of soil moisture sensor and humidity
sensor, the DC pump can be switched to ON and OFF mode with the help of
relay and Arduino. These data are seen on the BLYNK app and they are sent
as email notifications through the internet by using Arduino and Ethernet
shield. For installing a smart irrigation system we need to have two
techniques: IOT technique and Image Processing technique. The key
features of IOT are:
1) Sensors
2) Connectivity
3) Power
4) Integration
For the hardware part, the two 100 watts panels are used to generate
electricity and those panels are connected in parallel as the whole system
operates on 12V. The specifications of each solar panel: 19V open circuit
voltage, 12V short circuit voltage, 5A short circuit current, and the type of
panel is polycrystalline.
We then need a charge controller in order to charge the battery and in
case of low battery situations it disconnects the solar panel from battery if it
is fully charged. If the charging current exceeds the rated current, it may end
up to reduce the lifetime for the battery. The specifications of the charge
controller: 12V Voltage and 10A current.
For storing the energy from the solar panel, a battery is used. It acts as
a power source for the whole circuit. The specifications of the battery is, 12V
