or something that comes before another thing in time or in a series.
Example: The latest Ferrari is not only faster than its predecessors but also more comfortable. 4 Merchant (n) - a person whose job is to buy and sell products in large amounts,
especially by trading with other countries.
Example: a wine/grain merchant. 5 Prosperous (adj) (C1
) - successful, usually by earning a lot of money.
Example: In a prosperous country like this, no one should go hungry. 6 Ally (n) (C1) - a country that has agreed officially to give help and support to another
one, especially during a war.
Example: During the First World War, Turkey and Germany were allies/Turkey was an ally of Germany. 7 Timber (n) (C2) - trees that are grown so that the wood from them can be used for
building.
Example: These trees are being grown for timber. 8 Vessel (n) - a large boat or a ship.
Example: The company has five oceangoing vessels. 9 To carve (v) (C2) - to make something by cutting into especially wood or stone, or to
cut into the surface of stone, wood, etc.
Example: He carved her name on a tree.
