SUMMARY
Our Experiences of the HELLP Syndrome at the In-
tensive Care Unit
Objective: HELLP syndrome is characterized by
hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low plate-
let count. It carries an increased risk of multiple
organ system failure development and also gives
rise to an increase in fetal and maternal mortality.
The aim of our study was to evaluate the HELLP
syndrome patients who have been admitted to our
intensive care unit.
Material and Methods: Nineteen HELLP syndrome
patients who have been followed in our intensive
care unit between years 2008-2011 were evaluated
retrospectively.
Results: Eighteen patients were discharged from
intensive care unit with complete cure. One patient
was died because of ARDS and multiorgan failure.
Conclusion: HELLP syndrome is associated with high
incidence of maternal and perinatal complications.
Prognosis can be improved with early diagnosis, in-
vestigation at intensive care unit and appropriate
treatment.
Key words: HELLP syndrome, complication, mortality
