This chart lists the most common conditions seen by physicians in primary care and the complementary or alternative medicine (CAM) systems or modalities 
described in this book for them. It also allows you to know, at a single glance, the number of clinical trials that have been done for a condition in each CAM modality.
Column one lists the top 130 conditions seen in primary care. Column two lists the CAM systems or modalities described for that condition in this book. Column three 
lists the location of those descriptions. Column four lists the location of any precautions described for the CAM modality listed in this book. Column five lists the 
number of controlled clinical trials listed in the Cochrane Complementary Medicine Field Group's database of clinical trials as of the end of 1998.
When you are faced with a question about a particular clinical condition and complementary medicine, the following steps are suggested. First, look at column five to 
see if a possible evidence-based medicine (EBM) approach to addressing the problem is possible. The more controlled clinical trials there are for that modality, the 
more likely you can use current research to help guide clinical decisions. The prinicples described in 
Chapter 4
 on EBM can then be applied. Summaries of many of 
the studies listed in column five can be accessed through the Cochrane collaboration database or at the NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative 
Medicine's website at 
www.altmed.od.nih.gov/NCCAM
.
Information in this book about the condition and selected CAM modality use and precautions are at the chapter listed under columns 3 and 4, respectively. This chart 
provides indications for the possible use of these practices according to the expert authors of these chapters. Any use of CAM must be done in the context of proper 
medical care. These descriptions should not be used as definitive recommendations for the use of these practices and should not be the practitioner's sole source of 
information nor substitute for proper clinical judgment.
