Acute Glomerulonephritis
Acute glomerulonephritis (AGN) is a clinical syndrome
which is associated with an acutely coırsing glomerular
inflammation. The typical triad of its presenting symptoms
is macroscopic hematuria, hypertension and edema. In
children, the most common cause of AGN is poststreptococ-
cal glomerulonefritis. The evidence (/if any) of previously
experienced streptoccal infection, and serum complement
level provide guidance for the differential diagnosis of
AGN. In cases with typical APSGN there is no indication of
kidney biopsy. The primary medical care of all patients is
supportive, regardless of the etiology of AGN. Short term-
and long-term outcomes are generally favorable in child-
ren with APSGN Many clinical trials are currently procee-
ding for the development of both effective and safe vaccines
against streptococcal infections.
