AND IT IS SPRING! The crocus and bloodroot have
already bloomed in our woodland garden as have the
daffodils and tulips. Their places have been taken by
Virginia bluebells and Siberian squills, by violets and
bleeding hearts and delicate pasque flowers. The cherry
and apricot have yielded to redbud and flowering crab
and almond. Each week and month brings something
new. And so it is with The Archive as these Jottings
with their reports and acquisitions will indicate.
NEW ENTRANCE SIGN: One of the most recent
improvements at The Archive is a new entrance sign on
the outside door. It is identical to the heading at the top
of this page except in place of “Center for Research and
Education” it has “Entrance.” Visitors will no longer be
intimidated by the ominous warehouse looking doors.
SHELVING FOR TWO NEW COLLECTIONS:
Because our regular collection room is rapidly filling
up, we are opening a new room to house two recent,
very large collections, the Borge Christensen Collection
and the Walker-Johnson Collection. This has
necessitated ordering several ranges of shelving which
will arrive in June. Then these collections which are in
various stages of being accessioned and cataloged will
be properly housed.
ARCHIVE VOLUNTEER WEEK: Although are
ranks were somewhat diminished this spring – most
notably by the absence of Dody and Oscar Johnson –
thirty some volunteers did work for various lengths of
time performing a host of valuable and helpful services.
New this spring were Palma Hansen Plume from
Evergreen, Colorado, and Norman Freund of Fremont,
Nebraska. A special treat for the group was invitation
for dinner at Julie and Charlie Rohlfing’s lovely country
home where food and hospitality always abound.
Volunteer projects included organizing and filing back
issues of Hermes, inventorying collections of books,
alphabetizing and cataloging a massive accumulation of
obituaries, sorting, coding and cataloging letters in the
Walker-Johnson collection, translating various letters
and obituaries, and, of course, the unending Danish
Brotherhood project.
ARCHIVE BOARD MEETING: The board of The
Danish American Archive and Library met several times
during Volunteer Week followed by a plenary session of
all the volunteers at which time various pertinent issues
were presented and discussed. The board consists of
Joan Jensen of Ankeny, Iowa, Pete Petersen of Canyon,
Texas, Fritz Hansen of Wichita, Kansas and Sharon
Wigdahl, Tim Jensen, and John W. Nielsen of Blair.
The latter three serve as an executive committee and
meet weekly.
ASSISTANCE: One of the decisions of the board to
which the volunteers concurred was that some kind of
regular, paid assistance had to be provided for the
archive director – in other words, for me! This, of
course, entails a salary of at least $15,000.00 and that
means more generous financial support than what The
Archive has received in the past. Part of this salary can
come from interest derived from our endowment fund,
but we (you) must think in terms of a paid full-time
director in the not too distant future. I trust that you see
the need, are up to the challenge, and will help recruit
additional supporters. The hope is to have this assistant
in place by September.
BOARD MEMBER VISION: When asked to express
his vision for The Archive, board member Fritz Hansen
wrote; “In keeping with the three blue corners of our
new logo, my vision is three pronged: First, I hope the
archive becomes self-sufficient, self-sustaining, and
self-perpetuating. Second, I hope it experiences such
future growth, collectionwise, that it eventually requires
a physical facility and staff comparable to today’s
libraries of former United States Presidents. Third, I do
not want people to get so focused on contributing
archive materials devoted to the past that they overlook
submitting archival material relating to their own lives,
both past and present. Hopefully, people in the 22
nd
century will be able to investigate the archive and
discover how life was lived in the 21
st
century as well as
in the 2oth and prior centuries.”
OUR DISTINCTIVE ROLE: Both old-timers and new
visitors discover the invaluable trove of material housed
in The Archive. In a recent article Peter S. Petersen,
1962 Dana grad and retired Texas A&M professor is
quoted as saying, “This is by far the greatest collection
in the United States that reflects on Danish American
heritage…It really is a treasure.” Harold Hanson from
Albert Lea, Minnesota writes. “Thank you so very, very
much for the great data that you sent me, That was just
what I was looking for to complete the missing part of
Trinity’s history.” Such reports are gratifying.

ANTICIPATED EUROPEAN RESEARCHERS: One and
possibly two European scholars will be doing research in The
Archive this summer and fall. The first is Michael Bøss, an
associate professor at the University of Aarhus, who will spend
several days in August checking out holdings on institutions and
publications established by Danish-Americans. He would return
later in the fall to do his actual research. There is also the
possibility that the British anthropologist Richard Jenkins will
come to do a field study in the same general area
STUDENT RESEARCHERS: By the time that you receive
these Jottings, the eleven students in Dr. Iain Anderson’s
immigration history course will have completed their research and
papers using The Archive. Topics pursued by the students have
been Danish-American efforts to reconvert Danish Mormons,
Danish educators and pastors: P.S. Vig and Paul Nyholm, the
rescue of the Danish Jews during WW II, patterns of Danish
Brotherhood retention during the depressions of the 1890s and the
1930s, patterns of occupations as reflected by Danish
Brotherhood members, Danish Christmas traditions continued and
adapted by the immigrants and their descendants, patterns of
Danish language survivals in America, Danish immigrant
participation in and reaction to the Spanish American War,
antecedents to current tensions within the ELCA, and the
influence of cuisine as a factor in ethnic identity. Dr. Anderson
and one of his students appeared on the academic program for
Dana’s President’s Days in April. Both paid high tribute to The
Danish American Archive and Library
HANSEN-MENGERS RESEARCH: Tine Rosengreen
Pallisgaard, a past Bodtker Grant recipient, has completed her
research entitled “The Hansen-Mengers Family: A quantitative
and qualitative study of a Danish immigrant family.” Copies of
her dissertation completed for Odense University have been
deposited in The Archive both on disk and in hard copy. Ms.
Pallisgaard has done an impressive job of capturing the spirit,
faith, and contribution of members of this family by reading
approximately 600 of the 16,000 letters in the collection. Jørn
Brøndal served as her advisor. Several individuals have already
read her study since it has arrived in The Archive, and many more
will want to do so.
. UNUSUAL DOCUMENT: Among the valuable material
received this quarter was a certificate from Earl Nelson of Racine
that his father, Nels Nelson, received in 1919. The document
reads: “Racine Public Schools – Continuation Department –
School of Citizenship. This is to certify that Nels Nelson has
completed the Course in Civic Education for Foreign-born
Residents offered by The Board of Public Education of the city of
Racine, Wisconsin, and is hereby recommended to the Courts as a
man qualified to become a Citizen of the United States. Given this
21
st
day of April 1919.” The document is then duly signed by four
individuals. What makes the document unique is that it reflects
the efforts of a community with a large Danish population to
make it easier for Danish immigrants to confront the anti-
immigration mentality of the World War period and more readily
achieve citizenship. I have never before seen such a document.
UELC GATHERING: The weekend of June 13-15 is the
date for a gathering commemorating the former United
Evangelical Lutheran Church. The worship services are being
patterned after the Mission Meetings characteristic of that
church while the educational sessions will focus on the Indre
Mission (Inner Mission Movement). Dr. Tim Jensen will
present the movement’s origin and subsequent development
in Denmark, and I will discuss aspects of that movement in
the UELC. This is another opportunity for Danes –
Grundtvigian and Inner Mission – to explore their common
yet diverse heritage. For more information and registration
contact Julie Rohlfing, Alumni Affairs, Dana College, Blair,
NE 68008 Att: UELC Reunion (tel. 402-426-7235) or
jrohlfin@dana.edu
(Note the “g” is left off Julie’s last name.)
DEFERRED GIFTS: During the past months, we have
been informed of two generous deferred gifts, each in the
amount of $50,000.00. These gifts are reflected in the
crosshatched area of the thermometer on the first page of
these Jottings. This means that in terms of pledged gifts we
are very close to our original $600,000.00 goal which in
retrospect we realize is far short of the $3,000,000.00 that
realistically is now needed to adequately support an
undertaking as extensive as The Archive with a paid director
and secretary in addition to a volunteer support staff.
Beginning with the next Jottings our goal on the
thermometer will be $1,000,000.00. This thermometer only
records gifts and pledges to the archive endowment fund. The
general fund is not reflected here because its income is
constantly being disbursed in operational expenses. This is
the fund into which contributions for a director’s assistant
will be put because that will be a monthly disbursement.
SANDRA WIGDAHL SUBMITS THE FOLLOWING:
We are fortunate that The Danish American Archive and
Library has grown and thrived by relying exclusively on our
wonderful, dedicated volunteers. However, the time has
come when we need the help of someone who will be here on
a daily basis to field phone requests and help us with
cataloging and filing acquisitions along with a host of other
duties. This person would work mornings, five days a week,
and will be paid from archive funds. Therefore, we’re
turning to you to help us finance this person’s salary. Pete
Petersen came up with a great solution during our recent
volunteer week, and we think it can work. If 52 people will
donate one week’s salary ($150) to the archive, one year’s
salary needs will be met. Please contact John W. Nielsen at
402-426-7910 or at
archive@dana.edu
if you can help us.
