4. ELT Professionals in the Future: Visions and Aspirations Dr. Joo-Kyung Park (Honam Univ., S. Korea)
(Abstract) Having taught English for nearly forty years and nearing the end of her formal career as an ELT
professional, the presenter will reflect her personal and professional life path in this special talk.
She will share her story of growth and development as an ELT educator, teacher trainer,
researcher, program developer, administrator and leader of professional groups and organizations.
She will talk about the decisions, determinations, and inspirations that shaped her attitude,
motivation and achievement, along with the issues and challenges that she faced at different
phases of her career. Her own impact will be also considered, including how her life’s work in
different roles and functions has contributed to making changes in her students, teacher trainees,
and community members. Some examples will be given regarding how the power of professional
networks, leadership and service can be channeled into the development of individuals and
organizations, suggesting ‘commitment, collaboration, and creativity’ as key words for making it
possible. She will offer thoughts, visions and aspirations for ELT professionals in the future,
hoping that her own life path can inspire and encourage others who choose to continuously
develop and contribute to realizing our common, ultimate goal of ELT: Making a better world
through ELT.
