Review

Introduction

Minimally or less-invasive aortic and mitral valve proce-

dures have become common, and compared with conven-

tional procedures have been associated with fewer blood

transfusions, improved pulmonary function, reduced post-

operative pain, and shorter hospital length of stay.

1-9

 A

growing demand among patients and referring physicians

as well as an increasing acceptance within the cardiac sur-

gery community has driven the advancement of cardiopul-

monary bypass (CPB) circuitry, cannulas, and techniques

to facilitate these procedures. A variety of surgical and per-

fusion techniques for minimally invasive cardiac surgery

have been reported.

10-12

It is incumbent on the clinical team

to have a foundational understanding of these strategies in

order to appropriately care for each individual patient.

What follows is an overview of perfusion strategies for

minimally invasive cardiac surgery, including circuit and

cannula selection as well as management techniques.
