More and more people enjoy their free time activities which are dangerous (such as mountain-climbing, bungee jumping) What is the reason for this? Is this a positive or negative development? An increasing number of people these days are choosing to do something extreme, such as bungee jumping and mountain climbing, in their spare time. While there are various motives why they are doing so, I am of the opinion that it is a favorable trend.
The reasons as to why increasingly more people are taking up dangerous activities vary. Firstly, people are bored of routine activities like collecting banknotes and coins, socializing with their friends in a park or a café, and learning new things. They want to experience something unusual and exciting, so extreme activities can easily satisfy their needs. Another cause of this behavior can be the drive to seek thrill. When people try extreme sports or activities only once, they tend to experience adrenaline rush and want more of it. As a person who tried wingsuit jumping, I can assure that one feels like doing it time and again, having tasted this pleasure once. Therefore, it is no wonder that many people feel drawn to take part in extreme pastimes these days.
From my perspective, the trend towards trying risky free time activities is a positive one. For one, it gives people an opportunity to travel, enjoy foreign culture and natural sceneries. The closest place to my country to try skydiving, for example, is Kazakhstan, and I have to travel more than a thousand kilometers if i want to skydive. The same can be true for many other extreme free time activities, including surfing which requires big waves, thereby providing enthusiasts with an opportunity to travel. Secondly, albeit no less importantly, extreme activities help one explore their new 'me'. While for some these are a way of overcoming their fear, for others they are a perfect chance to take risks. No matter what one's intentions are, all of those who try dangerous activities are highly likely to become bolder, more confident, and improve their risk-taking skills, which are important qualities.
To conclude, the causes of why more and more people are interested in doing something extreme are to seek thrill and avoid mundane activities. In my view, this is a very positive development, because it provides people with a chance to travel and become better versions of themselves.
