Today, many people do not know their neighbors in large cities. What problems does this cause? What can be done about this? Fewer and fewer people are interested in developing relationship with their neighbors these days, especially in major cities and metropolises. Though this situation appears insignificant at a first glance, it is accompanied by a range of problems. This essay will explore some of these problems as well as proposing some solutions to tackle the issue of poor so-called “neighborhoodship” as a whole.
Initially, it is important to consider some problems arising as a result of lack of kinship among neighbors in large urban conurbations/areas. Perhaps the most concerning outcome is the breakdown of communities. When people are generally uninterested in community affairs – their neighbors by extension – they adopt poor community mind and feel displaced. This can lead to feelings of isolation and disconnectedness among many people, which can eventually result in the disintegration of a particular community. Not only that, but there is also a concern over community safety and security. Absence of interaction among neighbors tends to create feelings of insecurity, as a result of which people grow suspicious and hostile towards one another. This, in return, creates an environment prone to verbal and possibly, physical altercations in cases of mutual misunderstandings.
Having established the severity of this problem, it is essential to discuss possible measures. The most practical solution would be to develop community spirit. This can be done by arranging public events and gatherings such as festivals and neighborhood clean-ups. More than just helping entertain people and beautify cities, such events bring people together for a common cause and allow for mutual interaction. Government should also do its part by launching social campaigns to raise awareness among people. That is, people should be alerted to the potential risk of not developing relationship with their neighbors. Only then can problems stemming from lack of communication between neighbors be solved.
In conclusion, the main issues involving the fact that urban dwellers do not know their neighbors are demise of communities and poor safety and security. Thus, it is critical that government addresses this issue by hosting community gatherings and raising awareness in major cities.
