OTHER COMMON MEASURING TOOLS The T bevel (sliding T bevel) consist of a handle and an adjustable blade. It is used to lay out check all angled other them those of 45° and 90°.
Outside calipers have two curved legs hinged at toe end. Thus, toe distance between them is adjustable. Outside calipers are used to measure toe outs ide diam eter of round pieces.
The all -purpose measuring tool has many uses. It can serve as a square, marking gauge, protractor, depth gauge, dowel gauge, nail gauge, and other types of measuring tools.
Tools of Marking An ordinary lead pencil is toe most common marking tool. A pencil mark is easy to see and can be quickly removed. Use a hard lead (such as.) and mark lightly. When working with dark woods like walnut, a white or yellow artist’s pencil will show up better. Never sand off pencil lines. Doing so forces the lead (actually graphite) into the wood grain. The marks will show after the finish has been applied. Either planeor scrapeoff the lines.
A short-bladed knife (like the sloyd knife) is used for very accurate marking. It is used also for cutting and whittling, it should be used only when sawing to (on) the line. Then the saw will remove the mark.
The utility knife has a sharp blade that extends from a handle. Use it only when you know lhe mark will disappear as the wood is cut, formed, or shaped.
The marking gauge is used for marking a line parallel with the edge or face. It is used especially when the distance is less than 6”.
The combination square is used often for marking as well as for measuring.
A scratch awl is used for marking tire center of holes to be drilled or bored. It can also serve as a punch to make a small dent forstarting nails and screws. It is handy for scribing (drawing) lines on wood to show where it will be cut.
Measuring Stock Length To check length, place toe left end of the rule on edge. At toe other end of toe stock, read the measurement on toe rule. For longer lengths, use a zigzag rule or a steel tape. This will avoid measuring errors that come from moving a short rule several times.
WIDTH Measure toe width by holding toe left end of toe rule on one edge of toe stock. Slide your right thumb along toe rule until you can read toe correct width.
