The Design of MRP II (Manufacturing Resource Planning) in The Discontinuous Production Systems and an Application in Forest Products Industry

Today, the enterprises tend to develop new strategies to achieve flexibility in their present systems as they have to keep up with the continuous changes and competition in the manufacturing sector. They have left mass production strategy and chose to manufacture with more developed technology and processes. They have proceeded to otomation.

One of the most important problems in our country is great amount of work in process and non-inspection. Inventory costs as the results of improper planning, unstandardized, slow and unbalanced manufacturing, cause a decrease in productivity.

Manufacturing resource planning systems become more important as they support the firms with their existing resources more properly.

Forest products industry is the sector that applies developed manufacturing technologies in the last few years. Existing structure of the firms and the needs that appear everyday have made planning more important day by day.

With the computer aided manufacturing management system, basic needs such as cost analysis, manufacturing process planning, material requirement planning and manufacturing resource planning would be applied.

In this study, an application of Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II) in a forest product enterprise with a discontinuous production system was considered.

In the first part of the study, production and production systems, todays forest products industry in general, MRP as the first step as MRP II and MRP II are introduced.

In the application part of the study, the data from a kitchen manufacturing enterprise was studied by IBPro software that is used in the MRP II with the application, the phases in manufacturing planning for the production of an ordered product by MRP II modules were investigated.

For the application, large content of MRP II system was considered and in order to disable the complication, data of two models among different types of kitchen products were used.

As a result with this application manufacturing module of MRP II was used to study the steps of manufacturing planning to manufacture an ordered product. As the result of this, the need of evaluation of the present system of the enterprise was determined.
