and plastic have been compared in the categories, such as mass, size, time 
to give the desired shape (particularly for wheels). Necessary mass 
calculations have been done in the noted software, and some preliminary 
assumptions, such as the performances of materials on the last category 
have been made by authors. 
Results 
At the 
end
of the design stage: 

Mentioning the wheel material, since metal wheels considerably 
contribute to the increase in the overall mass, the mixture of plastic and 
metal is the ideal alternative in terms of the mass constraints (Figure 1.);
 

Regarding the drivetrain system, shaft-drive system can successfully 
replace the chain-drive system by eliminating the potential issues of 
dropping chains. The connection between the wheels and shaft-systems 
is through the constant-velocity joints; 

The drivers will interact with the pedals as a part of the drivetrain system 
making the rover human-powered type; 

The model of the rover meets the size and mass constraints (Figure 3.).

The designed rover was presented for NASA specialists on 15 December 
2021, and according to their recommendations, necessary design modifications 
will be made in the construction process. After the successful construction 
process, the rover is planned to be driven in NASA’s Marshall Space Flight 
Center during 28-30 April 2022.
Conclusions 
The rover design of authors representing Azerbaijan and Baku Higher 
Oil School for the first time in NASA’s HERC competition is capable of 
overcoming 12 obstacles and completing 5 tasks given in the competition 
handbook. After BHOS team’s competition performance during 28-30 April, 
significant experience will be obtained, which can be taken advantage of in 
the preparation process for the next year’s HERC.
