Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH, or the Bavarian Engine Works Company, is what the abbreviation BMW stands for. The corporation was founded in the German state of Bavaria, thus the name. It also represents the original BMW product line, which included engines for diverse uses. The Rapp-Motorenwerke GmbH, which started making aviation engines in 1913, is where the current BMW AG got its start. Rapp provided the German Empire's aviation force during the First World War. Automobiles had not yet gained widespread acceptance at that period. Trains were the preferred mode of transportation for long distance land travel.
The headquarters of Rapp Motorenwerke and Gustav Otto Flugmaschinenfabrik, who built the engines for the aircraft, were both in Munich, the capital of Bavaria. The Otto Company became Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG upon its bankruptcy in 1916. (BFW). Rapp shortly thereafter also altered the name of the business; in 1917, it became known as Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH. The emblem for BMW also depicts the Rapp company's beginnings. Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH established a stock corporation in August 1918. However, as the Treaty of Versailles prohibited Germany from producing them, the development of aviation engines came to a stop with the conclusion of the First World War. BMW decided to concentrate on integrated motors and railway brakes. Because of its success, the Berlin-based brake manufacturer Knorr-Bremse AG acquired the majority of BMW in 1920, consolidated the business, and moved operations to Munich. The separate corporation Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH briefly vanished from view, albeit not for very long. Camillo Castiglioni, a significant investor and innovator in the field of aircraft building, was Knorr-Bremse AG's largest shareholder in 1922. Along with the staff, production facilities, and corporate emblem, he purchased the BMW company name and moved everything to Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (BFW).In the same year, the business changed its name to Bayerische Motoren Werke AG and relocated into BFW's production premises on Lerchenauer Straße. And in this manner, the BMW name was once again registered in the business registry. As a result, BMW AG is legally BFW's successor. Even now, the BMW Group's corporate offices and parent facility are still housed at the original BFW location in Milbertshofen, Munich. Additionally, the aircraft producers left BMW AG another legacy: the company's formal birthday is thought to be March 7, 1916, the day BFW was founded. (BMW, 2019)
