Question: Demonstrate your understanding of reading skills & techniques: a. Analyse the following reading sub-skills: i) Skimming ii) Scanning b. Evaluate the effectiveness of different skimming and scanning techniques Note: Your answer must cover all of the points mentioned.
Amplification: There are two parts of this question so don’t forget to answer them both in full.
Watch out for the command verb ‘analyse’ in this part. Analysis is like an explanation, but in a bit more depth. To answer this part well, make sure to not only describe what the reading sub-skills skimming and scanning are, but talk about how they work, what they involve and why they are useful reading skills for learners to have. Make sure to discuss them separately.
Again, take careful note of the command verb which in this case is ‘evaluate’. Remember, ‘evaluate’ means to look at something and cast opinions about it. In this case, you need to name one skimming technique and then evaluate it. How effective is it? What’s good about it? How can it help learners to learn reading skills well? Are there any drawbacks? Then, do the same thing for a scanning technique. Make sure to discuss them both separately, and make sure you give a good evaluation!
