Verbs
The use of verbs was first selected as a metaphor for grammar, which Pongsiriwet (2001: 5) proved to be a significant contributor to writing mistakes. Particularly difficult to grasp yet essential to linguistic mastery are verbs. According to Pongsiriwet (2001:70), verbs are the primary cause of grammatical mistakes in EFL writing. Irregular past tenses, 3rd person singular "-s," and auxiliary verbs like "do/does/did, can, may, shall, and will" and their variations are notoriously difficult for students to use correctly.
Spelling
There are a few reasons why spelling was chosen. On the one hand, spelling is a characteristic of written work and is therefore very important and worthwhile to study. On the other hand, form is a crucial component of writing, and spelling is a part of that. A text that is incorrectly written or capitalized not only makes understanding more difficult, but it also conveys the wrong message and undermines credibility. In English, where pronunciation and spelling don't always coincide, this is much more important. In a separate counting, each distinct spelling error was counted once in order to avoid focusing merely on the quantity of errors. For instance, even though the word "Hous" (home) appeared four times in the text, it was only counted once.
Text Length
The study included text length for two reasons. First, when the data was evaluated, it quickly became apparent that several of the findings had a direct correlation to the length of the text. Because of their substantially shorter texts, the Basque class's average conjunction score was lower than that of their Swedish peers. The distinction between the two classes was eliminated as soon as conjunction usage was considered in the context of the written product. The similar process was followed for grammatical and spelling errors. All written lines longer than 8 words were tallied for each student and each class to determine the text length. Second, it has been discovered that text length and writing quality are related.
