Innovations in ICT are progressive; some technologies are still in the research phase. In
promoting R
&
D, it should be borne in mind that emerging innovations have been triggered through
interactive processes between economic activities on the market side and R&D activities on the
technology side. Therefore, in order to develop ICT-based logistics networks as efficient circulatory
systems for logistics, it is necessary to ensure appropriate interactions and feedback between the two
sides through specific organisational structures and mechanisms within corporations, as well as across
various institutions, nations and regions.
In order to maximise the opportunities derived from technological progress, governments should
not only support R&D efforts in the private sector, but also facilitate the demonstration of
technological solutions and seek productivity benefits from diffusion of information.
