Activity 3 Write the letters.
Objectives: to learn two more letters of the alphabet – Ii and Jj; to practise writing the letters; to consolidate the letters.
Ask the pupils to look at the letter “Ii” and say what picture is next to the letter (ice-cream). Play the DVD and ask the pupils to listen and repeat the letter and the corresponding picture. Also draw their attention to the way the letters are written. Then ask the pupils to open their Workbooks and start writing the capital letter “I” and then small “i”. Ask them to look at the example and follow the arrows. If necessary, demonstrate on the blackboard. Then repeat the procedure with the letter “Jj”.
Note: 1. If some pupils are very slow at writing don’t worry. Ask them to continue writing at home. The main point is to learn how to write and how to pronounce the letter.
2. There’s an optional activity on Page 12 for those who finish writing earlier.
3. After the pupils have practised writing the letters for some time you can work on the pronunciation of the letters “I” and “J” as follows:
STEP 1: Write the words “ice-cream” and “climb” and the sound [] under or over the letter “i” on the left side of the blackboard. Then write the words “swim” and “ski” and the sound [] under or over the letter “i” on the right side of the blackboard. Then say that the letter “i” also gives more than one sound, for example, the letter “i” in the words on the left side of the blackboard is pronounced as [] but in the words on the right side of the blackboard it is pronounced as []. After that have the pupils repeat these sounds after you individually, in rows and chorus.
STEP 2: When you finish with Step 1, write the words “jump” and “jam” and the sound [] under or over the letter “j” on the blackboard. Then say that unlike “A”, “C”, “E”, “G” and “I”, the letter “J” is always pronounced as [] and it does not give more than one sound. After that have the pupils repeat this sound after you individually, in rows and chorus.
Suggestion: Go on making a pronunciation poster as you did during the previous lessons. In this lesson you can make an unfinished poster for the sounds ([] and []) of the letter “I” and a complete one for the letter “J”.
