  • The formation of the phonological theory may be divided into two periods:
  • 1.The “prephoneme” period
  • 2.The “phonemic’’ period

  • Courtenay defined the phoneme as the “psychological”equivalent of the speech sound

Components of phonemes

  • Utterance breaks into sentences
  • Sentences into significative words
  • Words into morphological components or morphemes
  • Morphemes into phonemes

  • He is Russian scholar
  • He wrote “Principles of Phonology”which was first published in German in 1939
  • Phonemes should not be considered as “building block”
