201415 Science Research Paper Idea Links & Close Reading Questions, Claims

201415 Science-English Research Paper: CLOSE READING / IDEA DEVELOPMENT
Activity: Close reading of a variety of texts as a class. Exploring various source examples: 1. Short Reuters’ article, 2. Burger in a Petri dish article, 3. Are Biotech Foods Safe to Eat? 4. Editorial: Standing up for GMOs, 5. EBSCO: Nuclear Power, and others.
Purpose: Practice analysis of a variety of texts. Develop discovery questions in order to create arguable claims for research.
NOTE:

Below is a list of some, but not all of an endless number of ideas one could use to create an arguable claim around which to center this paper. Explore the list to begin thinking about what might interest you. You must be able to state an arguable claim and this claim must be connected closely to some aspect of science that has been approved by your science teacher. You will be expected to cite something from your science textbook. Also, remember that in scientific research, knowledge and circumstances change quickly, so therefore, you will want to choose current issues and support them with recently published documents.

Note the information on this page: http://connection.ebscohost.com/c/articles/7048303/nuclear-powers-new-promise-peril
*Students read / listen to article and annotate it. (Discuss annotations.) They must also come up with five questions they develop during their reading. Then each needs to construct five claims a student might state in an argumentation essay for this assignment. (It must link the argument to science.)

Note some of the other debatable topics listed in EBSCO:
