N=n (2n/2+n-1)

N - total number of relationships

n - Number of employees

 For example, if you are a manager of A, B and C, you will be able to communicate with them individually. However, when B, C, C, and B are in contact with A, they will be different from that of A alone. That's why B's thoughts on C, C and B also have two types of mutual communication. In this case, A should keep in mind the relationship of individuals with each other to ensure that they can work together if they do not work when they work for B and C. For this reason, this simple organizational structure should keep in mind the manager who has two employees.

Even if we think that the third D is added to the group, A's attitude to individuals will increase by one. However, when viewed as a group, the number of connections established is 18. Given that 44 people communicate with the fourth person in the group, the process of entering the fifth person will lead to uncontrollable volumes. When the sixth person joins the group, the amount of communication can reach 222, and the number of entries will be 490.

In this situation, the result is that no manager can communicate directly with more than six people. In psychology, this can be attributed to the concept of "span of attention." The number of people that ordinary people can pay attention to is limited. However, the number of members in the group may increase as the number of tasks the group members have to perform. As a result, Urwick underscored that the managers at one-to-one jobs would not be able to control the manager from 5, more than 6 people.

Theorists who are trying to find out what the manager is doing is highlighting the importance of the organization. Accordingly, some analysts have noted that in large organizations this number should be between 8 and 9 per cent on average, and average 5 in medium-sized organizations. Woodward pointed out that the control area in organizations is at average 6 but the process used by the organization in production is closely related to technology. Therefore, in the production process, organizations responsible for direct managers should be between 2 and 9 (average 4), in mass production places 4 to 13 (average 7) and in process organizations 5 to 19 (average 10). The following table shows the link between the increase in the number of employees and the change in the attitude (Richards, P.;1993).
