2.8.2 skilled in mathematical and logical works

C.M Usthād was expert in every field of knowledge, along with that he was very interested in logical and mind functioning works like mathematics. A co-worker of C.M Usthād writes about Usthād’s extraordinary skill and ability in Mathematics, especially in logarithm. He says “ It was a Sunday, usually when I was teaching, the driver came and said me, “Usthād is calling you” after the class was completed I went to Usthād, suddenly he took some papers from his laptop’s bag and said please check this work and please correct if there is any mistakes. It was the trigonometry work, which was related to navigation. After seriously looking, I said to him in Arts College there is a department for basic mathematics, we can refer to them. Usthād said yes, and gave me that work to give them. After noon, Usthād called me and said: “they said, after severe attempt they couldn’t understand it. After some while, he said tomorrow let us go to the students of LBS College. Some time they will be able to solve this problem. Then, after two days when I went to Usthād, he asked me about that work, then with a giggling he said, “more than one people of that school approved that there is no fault in this calculation”

This is the best proof to his ability in mathematics because he solved too complicated equation of mathematics without any risk. So he could achieve a good achievement in astronomy and ilm-al miqath93 CM Usthad known for his deep knowledge, punctuality, exact far sight, and the action with devoted mind and vast heart differentiated him from his other contemporary scholars.

2.9 THE SHOCKING AND CONFUSED DEMISE OF C.M USTHĀD

The death news of Qāḍi C. M. Usthad was shocking event to the people of Kerala.94 Who led them for decade, and paved them the way to walk ahead. It was on February14 -201095 he was found dead in the seashore of Kiyoor. There remain many secrets behind his murdr, until to this time the police officers or CBI did not find any progress in this case rather than concluding as a “suicide report” for their uninterested investigation. It is clear that according to religious scholar like CM there is no need to commit suicide. Rather he was suffering from serious leg pains. Therefore, it was impossible to an older man like him to climb the top level of the sea and to jump to the sea. Therefore, there is strong possibility to be having any some black handed activities behind his death. In addition, before some days of his death, he had a threaten letter and he was affected by black magic as it is obvious form the souvenir reports.

Following the strong protests and clarification on this case, the authority is still remaining silent without any progress. Really, his death was a trouncing loss to the Muslim community, especially people of Kasaragod. Within this least span of his life, many people approached him for various needs seeking blessings and find the solutions to the problems.96 Until this day there is, being conducted many protests against the officers to find the murders.

2.9.1 Negative approach from the part of authorities.

The death of C.M Usthād was not a natural death, but there are some hidden agendas behind his murder, because his body was found death in the seashore of Kiyoor. Beside it, it was risky task according to an aged person like C.M Usthād to reach that seashore without the help of others. Ironically, the door of room, in which he was sleeping, was locked by key from the outside. All these events shed light to the fact that it is a real murder attack; to defend this case some tried to prove that he committed suicide himself.

It was important according to a police the entire time after the body was found from the seashore of Chemberikka.97 Nevertheless, when people and relatives, mentioned the police personnel that this is a murder attack they moved with some confusing and doubtful actions as follows:

  • The police did not check the body, death place, slippers of Qāḍi found from sea plot, sticks found on rocks, closed rooms and lockers.

  • In addition, they gave the chance to photographers in the time of checking itself to enter the room and give false news and to spread it through media.

  • The DYSP who was a native and familiar with C.M Usthād spread fake news that this was suicide before the postmortem report was being released.

  • He misused the Burda translation work done by C.M Usthād in his last times.

  • He tried to spread among the notable personalities of Kasaragod that this was suicide attack.

  • Although the postmortem repot got in 16-02-2010, they were compelled to give exact news when this news was reported in some newspapers. Moreover, it is mentioned in post mortem report that they found four major wounds and the signs of escape.

  • When the sons came to interpret the words of Burda translations, the police scolded them.

  • Until the crime branch handle the case it was said conducted under CIA was a myth.98

Totally speaking, the police managed this case in an irresponsibility mode, as the other murder cases this case was to be taken with much importance, and now the case is in the hands of CBI. Nowadays the proceedings of case are going on. There are conducting many campaigns to speed up the case procedures, now although the investigations are in the hand of CBI, after six years of death, there was no any progressive moves in case. However, the campaigns are still going on.99 Recentyly CBI also avoided this case and they could not find any progressive reports other than before.100

CHAPTER THIRD:

EDUCATIONAL REFORMS OF C.M USTHĀD

3. 1 EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND OF MALABAR IN THE PERIOD OF C.M USTHĀD

When check the historical background of Kerala, we can find Kasaragod stands in last position due to its backwardness in progressive activities in educational and social fields. It was last developed district, because of its backwardness in geographical and lack of involvement in social movements. For the first time, Arabs, who came in Kerala between 12th centuries, laid the foundation for the educational movement. In addition, they tried to spread knowledge in surrounding areas like Kozhikode, Valapattanam, Mampuram, etc, but Kasaragod remained far from these renaissance occurred in mid Malabar.101 Religious education among the Muslims of Malabar can be divided into three distinct styles - Othupalli, Dars, and Madrasas.102

According to written documents the scholars of 18th -19th centuries, brought great developments in these areas educationally, socially, cultural, like Muhammad Sherool, Kiyoor Usthād, Kiyoor Ibrāhim Musliyar ,Qāḍi Abdulla Hāji. They all studied from Ponnāni known as “Makka of Malabar”. Muhammad Sherool and Izzuddīn Musliyar gave more stress on the material education than religious, but T Ubaidullā (one of the important person in the period of C.M Usthād) gave importance to the method of combining both educaton religious and material under one umbrella.

Kasaragod was also facing backwardness in political field also. There were not enough leaders to lead them and guide them. According to the population of records of 1991, total population of Kasaragod was 10, 70,169. Among them 3,15,198 were Muslims. 1, 53,320 male and 1,62,178 females. The number of students from first standard to tenth was 89,810. In 498 schools 2, 86,885 students were studying for SSLC, among them only 30-31% was Muslims. Muslims in Kasaragod gave more focus to the religious knowledge. Therefore, they sent their children to the madrasa or Pallidars to acquire religious educations.103
