Learning Objective: Module 8: 2.3, 2.4, 2.5
Question: Demonstrate your understanding of classroom interaction patterns, and self-appraisal, feedback and peer-to-peer teaching: Describe the main types of classroom interaction patterns online and in the physical classroom, including:
Online classroom i) T-Ss: The instructor engages with the entire class, providing through explanations and defining any unfamiliar words. The teacher also employs the TTT technique, where students initially complete an activity independently, and then the instructor introduces and teaches the target language based on identified issues. Then learners are given additional tasks to practice the newly learned language, such as finding examples of phrasal verbs. Although students may be able to complete the task, they may not understand the meaning without guidance. The instructor designs relevant activities to aid students’ understanding and growth. Students can ask questions while the teacher guides, educates, and facilitates effective communication and expression of thoughts.
ii) S-S: Student-to-student interaction. The students engage in conversations, working in pairs or using the chat box for partner discussions. In virtual classrooms, students can also collaborate in sub-groups or as a whole group, although this requires careful planning by the teacher to manage multiple chat boxes.
iii) Ss-Ss: Students collaborate in groups, and breakout rooms are an ideal setting for small group interactions.
iv) S-Ss: Student to students interaction. A student addresses the entire class by delivering a message, reading a story text, giving a presentation, or combining these activities.
Physical classroom I)(T-Ss) Teacher to student interaction. The teacher addresses the students, asking and answering questions. T-Ss interaction also include presenting information, introducing new topics, giving instructions, mentoring, and monitoring the students’ progress.
