th e person m o s t vocal a b o u t th e site is a rc h e o lo g is t J u d ith Field. In 1991, she 
discovered m e g a fa u n a bones d ire c tly a d ja c e n t to s to n e to o ls - a h e a d lin e - 
m a k in g fin d . She says th e re are tw o layers s h o w in g th e association, o n e a b o u t 
3 0 ,0 0 0 years old, th e o th e r 35,000 years old. If th a t d a tin g is accurate, it w o u ld
m e a n h u m a n s and m e g a fa u n a coe xisted in A u s tra lia fo r s o m e th in g like 2 0,000 
years. “ W h a t C u d d ie S p rin g s d e m o n s tra te s is th a t yo u have an e x te n d e d o ve rla p
o f h u m a n s and m e g a fa u n a ,” Field says. N onsense, say her critics. They say th e
fossils have been m o ve d fr o m th e ir o rig in a l re stin g places and re d e p o s ite d in

p a le o n to lo g is t w h o later g a in e d fa m e fo r revealing th e e xiste nce o f dinosaurs.
