What do you need for this 
activity? 
•
4-6 pieces of chalk and chalk board 
•
Camera - take picture of board after activity 
•
Timer 
How to use the Pre-
Assessment activity 
•
Tell students, “I want to learn what you already know about 
today’s topic.” 
•
Write the lesson topic name at top of the chalk board. 
•
Tell students, “You have one minute to think about what you 
already know about (topic).
•
Do not let students use their phones to look up topic. 
•
After one minute, give a piece of chalk to four students in the 
front of room. 
•
Tell the whole class following information... 
•
Write one word about the topic on the board
•
word can only be used “once” on the board, no repeats. 
•
When you have finished writing your word, walk back to 
your desk, and give your chalk to the next student, and sit 
down. 
•
Everyone should be reading the board so you know which 
words have already be used. 
•
Tell students with chalk to “walk” to board and write their 
word. 
•
Teacher should monitor the board for words used twice. 
•
Teacher should make sure all students write on the board. 
•
After all students have written words on chalkboard... 
•
Teacher (or volunteer student(s)) read topic words 
(vocabulary) on board out loud to class.
