Ask Good Questions 
What are good questions? 
•
Most teachers ask questions that only require the student to recall 
something from your lesson. These questions are very limited and 
only require using memory.

“What year did Amir Temur die?” 
➢
“What is the structure of an English paragraph?”.
•
Students need to be asked about what they think about (topic, 
statement, idea, etc.).
➢
“What do you think happened the year Amir Temur died?” 
➢
Why do you need to know and correctly use the structure of an 
English paragraph? 
•
Good questions do not have a single answer provided by the teacher 
earlier in the lesson. 
•
Good questions can have multiple answers. 
•
Good questions make students think independently.

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS 
When giving students 
INSTRUCTIONS: 
•
After you have given students instructions ask the class, “Does 
anyone have any questions?” 
•
You are silent and wait 5-10 seconds (or more seconds in the 
beginning of training students in this activity) 
•
This gives students “silent thinking time” to understand about 
the instructions, interpret and translate language (ESL) and form 
thoughtful questions to ask you, if necessary. 
When asking students

question, interpret and translate language (ESL) and form their

develop a thoughtful answer.
