JIGSAW ACTIVITY STEPS WITH DETAILS 
 
STEP ONE:
•
Before the lesson, divide lesson content into parts (4-6) depending on 
how many students you have.
•
Prepare materials students will use (read) for each part of lesson.
•
Example: Introduction to English Paragraph Structure divided into 
four parts:

STEP TWO:
•
Divide students into groups - one group for each part of lesson. This is 
the HOME GROUP. The students need to know who was in their 
HOME GROUP and their lesson topic/part. 
•
In the HOME GROUP every member is a assigned a 
different
topic 
segment of the lesson.
•
In the example above we have 16 students divided into 4 groups of 4 
students each. 
•
The lesson material was into four parts and you have four groups.
•
Each group should have at least four members because you divided 
lesson into four parts.
•
Sometimes you might have an extra person because class numbers are 
uneven, that is okay. 
STEP THREE:
•
Have each HOME GROUP 
appoint one person as leader
. 
•
The leader’s job is to make sure every group member is sharing 
information and creating a graphic organizer to record their notes.
•
Example of graphic organizer for “Topic Sentence”: 
STEP FOUR: 
•
Give the lesson material to the group leader to distribute to the group 
members.

Have the HOME GROUP leader assign themselves and each student in 
the group one part of the lesson to learn. 
•
Each HOME GROUP member’s job
is to read and review the lesson 
material plus make a graphic organizer to record the information.
•
Make all students understand each person in the HOME GROUP has 
different material to review. They should not look at other group 
member’s material.
•
Tell students how much time they have for this step and set timer. You 
can add more time, if necessary.
•
Teacher should walk around groups to view graphic organizers to 
check on understanding of student understanding. 
•
Give group one minute warning before ending time.
