Conclusion on the third chapter
Summing up the reasoning presented in the third chapter, we emphasize the following:
1. In the discourse, the FI acquires full significance and acts as a sign of illocution. FI is a means of illocutionary semantics of discourse, which takes an active part in its formation and deployment. Discursive conditions (argumentation and dialogic complementation) determine the illocutionary force of the statement, the bearer of which is FI. In modern discourse, FIs have an independent declarative illocutionary force in terms of argumentation, while assertive and commissive illocutions of FIs are formed in conditions of dialogic complementation.
2. Participation of FI in the deployment of the illocutionary semantics of discourse lies in the fact that FI contributes to the total illocutionary force of the statement, of which it is a part. This promotion is manifested in the increased intensity with which such components of the illocutionary force as the illocutionary goal and the sincerity condition or the intentional state of the agent are expressed. FI enhances the degree of intensity with which assertive, commissive and directive illocutionary goals are expressed. The analysis of speech acts with directive, assertive and commissive illocution allows us to conclude that the intensity of expression of assertive and directive illocutionary goals depends on the intensity determined by the methods of their achievement.
3. The category of intensity is related to intentionality Intensity is the degree of expression of intentionality. The introduction of FI into discourse signals an enhanced expression of the intentionality of the participants in the discourse.
4.FI is an important text-forming element that contributes to the pragmatic coherence of discourse. In the pragmatic aspect of discourse coherence, the illocutionary force links the phraseological context and FI into a semantic unity.
5. The interaction of the context and FI is carried out through such components of the illocutionary force as the illocutionary goal and the condition of sincerity. The illocutionary goal relates the sequence of speech acts to the speaker’s intention, while the sincerity condition relates speech acts to the speaker’s intentional state. Contributing to the intensity of the illocutionary goal and the conditions of sincerity, FI appear in the discourse in the form of “knots” or “braces” that ensure its illocutionary and intentional coherence both at the local and global levels.
6. The discourses of FI functioning are argumentative and narrative. In argumentative discourse, FI contributes to the illocutionary power of persuasion, i.e. the strength of the argument. FI enhances the illocutionary force of “putting forward an argument”, or in other words, the degree of persuasiveness of the argument, and thus makes the statement more argumentative. In narrative discourse, FI plays the role of a Predicate and serves to verbalize the dynamic aspect of an event. FI is a linguistic means of expressing the power dynamics of an event, as well as a sign of an event, a sign that indicates the gradualness and continuity of an event.
7. In the discourse of a linguistic personality, FI is a strategic tool used by an emotional linguistic personality, usually persistent in achieving an illocutionary goal and following a chosen speech strategy.
