ABSTRACT
After the birth of Islamic religion, the Azerbaijani territory was made Muslim by the
Arab armies. Azerbaijan has continued its existence for many years depending on the center
of caliphate. This region also has a rich geography due to the widespread use of different
belief systems. Before Islam, it is known that different beliefs such as Christianity and
Zoroastrianism are common in the region. After the acceptance of Islam, the quarrels of
power in the Caliphate center and the resulting political-theological debates have affected the
region.
When we look at the scientific works carried out up to now, we have found that the
sects in Azerbaijan have been studied very limitedly. However, when studied carefully, it
appears that there are many Islamic sects in the region such as Kharijite, Mu'tazila, Hanafism,
Shafiism and Shiism. In our presentation, the sectarian status of the Azerbaijani region, which
has a rich area in terms of sectarianism, will be briefly mentioned. In particular, the Hanafi
sect will be examined and the birth and expansion of Azerbaijan, the perspectives of the states
established in the region and the Hanafi scholars will be examined.
