gatekeeper media n. a person who controls the flow of information, not only but especially in the context of news editing. News editors and journalists occupy a classic gate-keeping role, though this is perhaps being progressively diminished by the rise of alternative sources of news on the internet as well as by the increasing adoption of user-generated content. mmo

genderlects media n. a variety of language which is associated with a particular gender. Like other sociolects or social dialects, in which social class produces distinctive linguistic features, genderlects can be determined according to both passive acquisition of language use through immersion in a particular community, as well as active investment in particular spoken and written forms that signify identification with specific groups. sj

genre media n. a category of literature, music, film, visual art, which shares conventions of form, style, or subject matter. A work may be compatible with more than one genre. New genres may evolve, while old ones may fall out of favour. Mikhail Bakhtin’s (1895-1975) concept of heteroglossia or “speech genres” emphasizes that genres, as modes of speaking or expression, are socially defined and recognized, in that formal and stylistic features respond to a particular communicative situation.
