geodemographics media n. as classifications which relate to the structure of populations, geodemography links the fields of demography, geography, and sociology, and seeks to study people based on where and how cities and neighbourhoods have formed. The foundations of geodemographic theory may be located in the work of Charles Booth on impoverished neighbourhoods in London in the early twentieth century, as well as of the Chicago School of sociology, which respectively developed the ideas of ‘classifying neighbourhoods’ and ‘natural areas,’ within cities. The idea that geographical sectors have particular socio-economic and cultural features has been also put to commercial use to tailor information and services towards groups based upon location and population characteristics. sj

gesture media n. a form of non-verbal communication in which movements of the hands, face and other parts of the body communicate meanings that supplement, complement or work independently from spoken communication. mmo
