Like other sociolects or social dialects, in which social class produces distinctive linguistic features, genderlects can be determined according to both passive acquisition of language use through immersion in a particular community, as well as active investment in particular spoken and written forms that signify identification with specific groups. sj
genre media n. a category of literature, music, film, visual art, which shares conventions of form, style, or subject matter. A work may be compatible with more than one genre. New genres may evolve, while old ones may fall out of favour. Mikhail Bakhtin’s (1895-1975) concept of heteroglossia or “speech genres” emphasizes that genres, as modes of speaking or expression, are socially defined and recognized, in that formal and stylistic features respond to a particular communicative situation.
