HOW TO ESTABLISH GOOD CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT IN EFL CLASSROOMS?

Firuza ISMAYILOVA

Choosing a career is a tough decision and if you choose the wrong profession for you it can bore you in a very short

period of time. In some professions salaries or working environments can be attractive but if you want to be a teacher there

should be a wish, a desire for it. Firstly, I think if you love being teacher, so you can easily achieve your goals and aims. In

this case love to your profession is a half of success and the other half is a good management in classrooms. So the thesis

aims to find out the main points of establishing good classroom management, which should be taken into consideration in

achieving more effective and productive teaching-learning process.

The scholars Hue Ming-Tag and Li Wai-Shing (2008) claim classroom management, after all, is about creating an

environment that is inviting and appealing, so that students are pleasantly engaged in their learning and teachers share their

enjoyment of the learning process, as well as, the same speech community and the same feelings while building rapport

which means somehow laughing together. It helps students to decrease their anxiety and stress for maintaining free-stress

zone.

But Robert J. Marzano (2003) claims that teacher-students relationship is a third aspect of effective classroom

management, after rules and procedures, disciplinary interventions. He stresses that if teachers have friendly relationships

with students, they are more readily to accept given rules and instructions, otherwise without the foundation of a good

relationship, students commonly resist rules and procedures along with the consequent disciplinary actions. The same author

also mentions the role of relationship with parents in managing classrooms, their beliefs and attitudes towards this issue

especially in foreign language classrooms.

When it comes to the concept of discipline as Carol Cummings (2000) states when parents or teachers are asked to

generate synonyms for classroom management, discipline is always listed firstly. Actually for our purposes discipline does

not mean “to punish”, rather it means to teach self-control. Unfortunately as a result of global problems and mega police

city lives we have more students with clinical depression or with uncontrolled anger. Pressure is felt by students themselves.

Disciplinary problems or misbehavior may range from small disturbances to those that are life-threatening.  As Carol

Cumming states (2000) firstly begin each class period with a positive attitude and high expectations. If you expect your

students to misbehave or you approach them negatively, you will get misbehavior. This is an often overlooked aspect of

classroom management.

In my opinion the most important characteristic feature of effective classroom management is taking into

consideration students’ feelings, trying to behave more friendly. Students can also have some personal/educational problems

or negative beliefs. In this case, for instance searching sites used by students, getting interested in their hobbies or interests,

giving an impression that you as a teacher are at the same speech community (using the same “teen” or “kid” words or

phrases) and share common beliefs, culture, tradition, social norms and etc. In order to show how sincere you are a teacher

should watch students as they come into class, may be by looking for signs of possible problems before class even begins.

For example, if a teacher notices a heated discussion or problem before class starts, it is a good idea to try to deal with the

problem then by allowing the students a few moments to talk with you or with each other before you start your lesson to try

and work things out. Another way to solve the problem a teacher can separate the students if necessary and try to gain

agreement that during the class period at least they will drop whatever issue they have.

To sum up, an effective classroom management contains not only one aspect, but it can include nearly all the

aspects of a foreign language teaching process. In order to achieve more successful educational term/semester an effective

teacher should pay attention even little details during or before a lesson. In managing classroom choosing appropriate

method takes a great part, as it shows how effective a teacher is. Avoiding artificial actions can also help a teacher to be

beloved one not only inside classroom but also outside classroom. For example, having good sense of humor helps teachers

to relieve tense classroom situations and makes the class more enjoyable. Most importantly, a sense of humor allows see the

joy in life and makes the person happier through this sometimes stressful career.
