Refuge in the Past during the Final Age

mediately makes his work part of a specific conversation about ordering
the past.

At the same time, however, his work also suggests a reorientation
of some of
The Great Mirror
’s positions, including an active reposition-
ing with regard to courtly loci of authority as well as the legacy of court
literature. Because
The New Mirror
has no English translation, I will be-
gin with a short summary of the work’s content. Then I will look at the
preface in greater detail, as the importance of both narrative place and
cosmological principle are most explicit there. Lastly, I will turn to the
body of the narrative proper to analyze two new problems that Tamet-
sune’s work has introduced: the relationship between court culture, nar-
rative
structure,
and the past; and the issue of the morality of writing.
The New Mirror
opens with a preface, to be returned to below, and
consists of ten scrolls. In the first three scrolls, it focuses on the imperial
family, covering the reigns from Emperor Ichij
ō
(980–1011) through the
ascension of Emperor Takakura (1161–81). In a meandering, often circu-
lar style, the narrative proceeds through successive rules, giving promi-
nence to accounts of lineage and social events—typically those of the
court, such as funeral observations or poetry contests and/or composi-
tions.

One particularly long entry, that of “The Day of the Rat” (typi-
cally a reference to the first “rat” day of the new year), is representative of
the breadth of concerns in
The New Mirror
. Taking place in 1026 just after
The Great Mirror
breaks off, the entry begins with the tonsuring of Fuji-
wara no Sh

shi, Michinaga’s daughter and the future J

mon-in. After
remarking on Sh
ō
shi’s youth and how the decision was both “laudable”
and “moving,” the narrator reports that Imperial Princess Senshi (964–
1035), the current Kamo priestess, has sent a poem on the occasion that
speaks of her admiration for Sh
ō
shi, as well as her envy at Sh
ō
shi’s chance
to embark on the Buddhist path:
