In the early stages of human society, imitations appeared as the main means of communication. Despite the fact that their grammatical research began a little later, a lot of work has been done on them to this day. This article researches the historical occurrence and study of imitation words, and it examines the views of world scientists, especially Korean linguists, regarding imitation words, their role in terminology and morphology. Definitions of imitation words in different languages and the main differences between them are shown. General conclusions and views of the author are given regarding imitation words.
