3.4 Various discourse types
Students must be exposed to most discourse types (novels, newspapers, TV, radio programs) without
the help of teachers or dictionaries. ‘Encountering large amounts of meaning
-focused input should
play a large role in fueling further lexical development’ [1, p. 411]
.
One question here is connected to
the self-discipline of learners. Not all of them demonstrate the level of diligence necessary for
exposing themselves to a massive number of sources of information that are worth studying. Book
reports, presentations, critical reviews of various radio programs/podcasts, etc are the academic
events that are often easy to organize and advantageous in encouraging students to try harder and
show better results. Such learning activities when not performed frequently are generally longer-
awaited and, hence, better prepared.
