ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY of Ornithogalum sigmoideum Freyn et Sint.
Ornithogalum sigmoideum Freyn et Sint. are used widely in the Black Sea reagion of Turkey for consumption in the daily diet.
In the present study, different antioxidant tests were employed in order to evaluate the antioxidant activities of water, ethanol and acetone extracts of Ornithogalum sigmoideum Freyn et Sint., namely, reducing power, free radical scavenging (DPPH), hydroxy radical scavenging, ABTS radical scavenging, metal chelating activities. The results were compared with natural and synthetic antioxidants, e. g. α-tocopherol, butylated hydroxyanisole, butylated hydroxytoluene. The levels of total phenolics and total flavonoids of the extracts were also determined. It was determined that antioxidant activity increased with increased concentrations of the extracts.
It is concluded that because of the highest antioxidant activity of acetone extract, which was rich in flavonoid, there could be a relation between flavonoids and antioxidant activity.
This study showed that Ornithogalum sigmoideum Freyn et Sint. extracts exhibited antioxidant activity in all tests and that the extracts could be considered as a source of natural antioxidants.
