Synthesis and Characterization of Starch Based Biocompatible Polymers
The biocompatible materials can be substitued instead of the tissues or organs, or supported them in livings and not give damage to livings. These materials are classified as metals, ceramics, composites and polymers. Biocompatible polymers are very important for medical applications. One of these applications is that mucoadhesive and biocompatible polymer carrier system or matrix is used in the mucoadhesive system. Starch is a natural polysaccharide which is abundant, inexpensive and biocompatible. Mucoadhesive ability of the natural polysaccharides can be increased by the various modification reactions.
A literature survey has not yielded any research on the synthesis of starch based vajinal tablet using for hormone release, the aim of this study was that the biocompatible and mucoadhesive starch based polymer matrixes for using the vaginal hormone delivery system for the eustrus synchronisation in ewe, are synthesized, characterized and examined their mucoadhesive properties.
For this purpose, two main group experiment are carried out. In the first group experiments, starch-graft-poly(acrylic acid) (N-g-PAA) are prepared by using the various types of starch (rice, wheat, potatoes, maize) for the comparison to their properties. In the experiments, some type of the starch are gelatinized to investigate the gelatinization effect. Moreover, the crosslinker agent (N,N’-methylen bisacryrilamid (NMBA)) is added into the polymer matrix to observe the crosslinking agent effect. In the second experiments, poly(acrylic acid), gelatinized and not-gelatinized rice starch, and rice starch-graft-poly(acrylic acid) copolymers are thiolated by L-cysteinehydroxylaminhydrochloride (Cys) and thiolated poly(acrylic acid)-starch blends are prepared . All modified starch polymers were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and graft amount % of the graft copolymers and thiol groups of the thiomers were determined. In order to investigate the mucoadhesion properties of the products, swelling index %, total work of adhesion/bioadhesion work and peak detachment force/adhesion force of the tablets prepared from all modified starch polymers were determined in pH 5 lactate buffer solution used as in vitro vajinal medium by using vaginal mucosa of ewe.
It is concluded that gelatinized rice starch based polyacrylic acid copolymer containing NMBA (N-g-PAA) prepared in this work has good swelling, the less erosion, well mucoadhesive and is suitable polymer matrix for vaginal applications.
