Investigation of The Dimerization of Oleic Acid and Its Reaction Kinetics
In this study, dimerization of oleic acid was carried out at reaction temperatures of 180,200 and 220 oC for 5, 10, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 minutes.
Bentonite containing 75 % montmorillonite was used as catalyst in the reactions of dimerization. Dimerization reactions were performed in a stainless steel semi-batch reactor resistant to high pressure and high temperature. Dimerization reactions were achieved by using 90 % oleic acid, 5 % montmorillonite and 5 % water in nitrogen media. After dimerization reaction was completed, the product obtained was cooled, then the products were separated from the catalyst by filtration. After filtration, vacuum distillation was applied to the remaining reaction product. The vacuum distillations were done at about 5 mm Hg pressure and 250 oC. Monomer acids were readily removed from residue (dimer acid and trimer acid) by distillation since they are more volatile than dimer acids.
Dimerization reactions of oleic acid reached out yields of 27 %, 35 % and 60 % at 180, 200 and 220 oC for 180 minutes, respectively.
First order rate constants of the ’’Oleic acid → Dimer + Trimer’’ reaction were calculated. Arrhenius parameters were calculated from the first order rate constants.
