Investigation of The Extraction Equilibria of Organic Acids With Phosphorus Containing Compounds and Amines
Reactive liquid-liquid extraction for the recovery of the organic acids by a suitable extractant has been found to be a promising alternative to the conventional processes. For the design of extraction process, equilibrium data of the mixture is required to select the proper extractant for reactive extraction.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the extraction equilibrium of organic acids with phosphorus-compounds and amines. In this work, formic acid, acetic acid and propionic acid were used as organic acids. Diethyl malonate, diethyl carbonate and diethyl fumarate were used as diluents. As extractant, tributyl amine were taken representing amin compound, and tri-n-octyl-phophine oxide and tri-n-butyl phosphate were taken as phosphorus-compound.
The solubility curves and the tie-lines of water – corboxylic acid (formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid) – dibasic ester (diethyl malonate, diethyl carbonate, diethyl fumarate) ternary systems were determined experimentally at T= 298.15 K. The distrubition coefficients, seperation factors and selectivity values were obtained from experimental results. The reliability of the experimantal tie-line data are checked using Othmer-Tobias correlation. The results were shown on tables and figures.
In order to improve the exctraction efficiency, the solutions of various concentrations of tributyl amine, tri-n-octyl-phophine oxide and tri-n-butyl phosphate in organic solvents were used as extractant. The results were compared with the extractions performed with pure solvents.
It was found that diethyl malonate appears to be a useful among the used solvents for the extraction of formic, acetic and propionic acids from its aqueous solutions. It was observed that (tributyl amine + diethyl malonate) solvent system as extractant has given the best results in reactive extraction process of our study.
