Preparation Of Waterborne Acrylic Emulsions Containing Nanoclay And İnvestigation Of Their Properties

Nowadays waterborne acrylic emulsions are preferred in many fields as polymer based materials due to both environmentally friendly and their low cost. They are especially used in the production of and not paleness topcoats and their films have excellent properties such as high weather resistance, solvent resistance and hardness. It is known that, surface coating materials which are produced by water based acrylic emulsions with nanoparticle fillers have higher physical and chemical properties than surface coatings which are produced water based acrylic emulsions without fillers.

The aim of the study presented this thesis is that the investigation of the effects of the addition of clay and silica as nanoparticle to the conventional waterborne acrylic emulsion on the surface coating properties of the emulsion. The changes of the surface coating properties of the similar commercial emulsion by the addition of the same nanoparticles were also investigated.

Two groups experiment were realized. In the first group experiments, waterborne acrylic emulsion was obtained and characterized. Firstly, waterborne acrylic emulsion which contains terpolymer was obtained by using methyl methacrylate (MMA), ethyl acrylate (EA) and butyl acrylate (BA) monomers according to the free radical addition polymerization mechanism and emulsion tecnique. Terpolymer separated from emulsion by the coagulation was characterized by using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differantial Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) tecniques.

In second group experiments, the emulsions containing nanoparticles were prepared, the films were obtained from these emulsions and standart surface coating tests were applied. In first step, novel nanocomposite emulsions (Si-E, MMT-E, Si-KE and MMT-KE) were prepared by the addition diffent amounts of silica and MMT as clay compound nanoparticles to the emulsion (E) prepared and the similar commercial emulsion (KE). The amounts of nanoparticles silica and MMT were selected as 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 5 ve 10 wt % according to the total monomer amount used in the reaction. In the second step, standart surface coating tests (drying degree, hardness, adhesion, gloss, water resistance, solvent resistance, wet-dry and heat cycle tests) were applied to the films prepared from all emulsions. The results were evaluated comparatively.

It was determined that waterborne acrylic emulsions containing silica and MMT nanoparticles prepared in this study can be used in the manufacturing of the lustrous emulsion type nano paint with low cost, high performance and environmentally friendly.
