Determining Routes of Automated Guided Vehicles by Self Organizing (Kohonen) Maps in Flexible Manufacturing

Over the past 50 years, Routing or Vehicle Routing has become an important problem from the point of Planning and Logistic. Different variations of Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP), Capacitated Vehicle Routing, Vehicle Routing with Time Windows, Multiple Depot Vehicle Routing arise in a logistics planning contexts.

In this study the transportation of the products which are in a stable depot in a plant by a set of homogeneous forklitfs based on Self Organizing Map algorithm is addressed. The objective of this study is to minimize the total traveled distance by using SOM.

An algorithm was created and tested by current data. Actually, this algorithm was created for travelling salesman problem then adjusted to the vehicle routing and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) in a factory.

The results of SOM and Sweeping Method are compared and this comparison shows that SOM is giving a solution which is very close to sweeping method result.
