Determining of Most Appropriate Location of Ambulance Stations on Routes Between İstanbul-Ankara and İzmir

In the medical emergency systems, the response time is an important performance measure. Most of cases that require emergency response may lead to the loss of life or permanent deficiencies on the patient side. For this reason, there is a direct relation between response time and health condition of a patient. Main part of the response time is spent in reaching to the patient and this access time can be minimized by locating a finite number of stations with balanced capacities in optimal points.

In this work, we propose a new mathematical model for the emergency response systems, referred to as “Balanced Work Load Coverage Model (DIYKAM). In this model, our objective is twofold. First, our model computes the station locations that minimize the service distance hence response time between station and event locations, and secondly, it balances the workload of each station. We implement our model in AMPL and solve the ambulance station locations on “Istanbul-Ankara-Izmir” route. Finally, we compare the outcome of our model to both “Maximum Redundancy Coverage Model” proposed by Hogan and Revelle (1986) and “Finite Capacity Coverage Model” proposed by Pirkul and Schilling (1991).
