The Investigation of Mechanical and Chemical Properties of Graphite Added High Alumina – Castable Refractories

Refractory materials play an important role in the production or ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Liquid phases that form at high temperatures, metal, mate and particularly reactions with slag may affect the service life of refractories. Melted Slag causes corrosion by dissolving refractory or diffusion.

Graphite addition to the refractory increases corrosion resistance due to its wettability. To evaluate this property in graphite added castable refractories excess water is required in mixing and in casting. This situation causes increased porosity in casted refractories and limits their use.

New methods have been investigated to improve process. Hence as a new method, the aim of this work is to plate graphite in matrix with alumina using sol – gel method and then to use as a castable refractory.

Aluminium isopropoxide was hydrolyzed with water at 90 0C in a reactor and peptised with HCl. pH of the solution was adjusted to 2,3. The solution was stirred for 15 minutes after graphite addition. The mixture was held at 120 0C for 8 hours and gelled. Later, the gel was heated up to 550 0C at a rate of 2 0C/min and alumina coated graphite was obtained after 3 hours of heat treatment.

Refractory samples containing 3, 6, 9 wt % graphite and 3, 6, 9 wt % alumina coated graphite were prepared using castable alumina as a matrix refractory material. Open pore percent, water absorbability, bulk density and compression strength of all samples were calculated and compared with the original refractory material. In addition, crucibles were produced as described in DIN 51069 to investigate the corrosion resistivity against slag. Crucibles were treated with slag obtained from Erdemir A. Ş. Samples were then sectioned and diffusivity and corrosivity of slag was investigated both by macro and micro analyses.

In this work, detailed research carried out physical and chemical properties of the samples revealed that alumina plated graphite with sol – gel process was a useful method for producing graphite containing alumina castable refractories. The sample having 6 wt % alumina coated graphite exhibited the optimum properties and showed a good slag resistance.
