Introduction Since 28 years ago, National Aeronautics and Space Administration
(NASA) has been annually organizing Human Exploration Rover Challenge
(HERC) which covers around 100 school/university teams designing,
constructing, and testing their human-powered rovers. In the main section of
the competition, 1 male and 1 female student drive the rover to overcome 12
barriers and complete 5 tasks in 8 minutes. During the design and construction
process of the rover, teams need to meet certain requirements given in the
handbook which can be accessed through the NASA’s website. [1] The
following are some of the important announcements made by NASA HERC
2022 Staff:
Wheels, including their outer surfaces and supporting elements have to
be non-pneumatic;
The usage of drive systems other than the chain-drive system will be
rewarded with 5% extra points;
The usage of energy storage devices is prohibited within the drivetrain
system;
The produced rover has to fit a 5x5x5-feet volumed box and be no more
than 210 lbs of mass.
Since the first 2 announcements have been made for only this year’s
HERC, the authors’ rover design will be the first design solving the
overmentioned points.
